Ever since I can remember, my mother has told this story about the first time she saw me... It was a few hours after I was born and as I was laid into her arms with blankets wrapped tightly around me, somehow I managed to stick one little hand out. This little hand, mum says, was mostly all fingers and she proclaimed for all the world to hear: "just look at those long fingers, maybe she'll be a piano player...." and that was where it all started. When I was four I was given a small plastic guitar, and when I was big enough to sit behind a piano I excitedly started to learn. When school began I was put on the violin but as luck would have it my violin teacher too noticed my long fingers and said that I would be more suited to the cello. Thus began my love affair with the cello.
As I grew up I started to be very interested in the way that music effected us, both physically and emotionally. I began writing my own songs on the guitar and experimenting with different sounds the cello could make. Hearing the great neurologist Oliver Sacks speak sparked my interest in Music Therapy. Since then I have studied, mentored and completed successful community music workshops. I have been to the Solomon Islands, Peru, Zimbabwe and worked across Australia with underprivileged youth. Currently I am working with a colleague in Zimbabwe to start a community music school in a very poor area of Harare. I hope to one day become a registered music therapist and continue my learning in this field.
When I started University I was unsure of what I wanted to do with music and performing so I enrolled with the Queensland University of Technology. It was here I first encountered the world of laptops, blinking lights, electronics and strings. Three years later I proudly completed my degree at QUT with a digital performance major. Through the amazing people that you meet at University I was playing in a multitude of local bands within the first year and it was through QUT I first encountered deepblue. Since completing my degree I have been composing my own songs and performing regularly with deepblue and local bands. I teach at home and immerse myself in community music work and I honestly can say I love what I do! Sometimes it doesn't pay the bills but I feel blessed to be where I am today.
