Background

In 2004, Prof. Andy Arthurs (QUT) and Darren Clark (Creative Media Warehouse, Knoego Consulting, Dmand, The Ocean Group) began developing a new concept for commercialising the orchestra.

They saw a need to challenge orchestral music culture by contesting every aspect of the traditional orchestra to create a new model for the 21st Century.

By developing a contemporary model using the elements that drive a band (brand, repertoire, passion and performer involvement all driven by consumers) combined with the successful elements of the tried and tested traditional orchestra (power, size, reproducibility and quality), deepblue was conceived.

The music of deepblue is eclectic, covering all genres seemingly simultaneously - ranging from the depths of Mahler, to the Beatles, and even contemporary composers from all around the world who have written specifically for deepblue.

By combining the elements of the traditional orchestra with the immersive sound, visual and lighting, performer interaction, and diverse repertoire, the intention of deep blue is to be more an experience and a new way of presenting orchestral music than a performance.
